About

Hello and welcome to my new look blog.  For those of you who don’t know me, I am just a happy amateur who has a keen interest in aviation.

My day job at Kirkwall Airport allows me to snap more unusual visitors and wherever I go I have my camera with me so the photographs can be taken anywhere.

Please take the site as it is meant to be, just thoughts and pictures from an enthusiasts perspective.

All the best

Neil

  1. Dear Neil!

I have found your blog while looking for information about Kirkwall airport. Since you seem to be an expert, I seek your advice with the following question:
A friend and I are planning to fly a motor glider from Germany up to Scotland in late July / early August. It is our plan to fly from Orkney or Shetland over to Bergen in Norway if possible. While the flight is possible in theory (we have enough range to safely fly that distance) we wanted to ask you for any practical advice you might have, particularly if you see this happening regularly by other small aircraft. How is the weather usually at that time? Will we run the risk of being stuck for many days without good visibility? Are the landing conditions usually very windy and dangerous for small light aircraft?

Thank you very much for any info you might have for us! We look forward to appear in your blog with our Grob G109 motor glider!

    • Hello Soren

I wouldn’t call myself an expert. Just a happy amateur. WE get regular flights in from Norway and July/August can be kind although the weather is so variable here. I will pass your message on to Air Traffice who may have accurate statistics for the times you are suggesting.

I will look forward to your arrival.

      All the best

      Neil

    • Hi Gary

      All the best

  2. Hello Neil.

My wife and I met you earlier this month while we our Disney Cruise Ship stopped in Kirkwall. As I am an aviation enthusiast, we took the bus to your airport to see if you had any helicopter memorabilia or materials for sale. Although you had nothing helicopter related, you graciously gave me beautiful calendar of vintage Kirkwall airport paintings. Your kindness, generosity and hospitality was one of the nicest acts I’ve ever experienced. The world would be a better place with people like you Neil.

Thank you again so much as the calendar, and more importantly your kindness, was one of the highlights of our entire trip.

We wish you much success and happiness in life, as you certainly deserve it.

By the way, your photos didn’t disappoint…what a treat!! Who knows…maybe one day you and I will attend an airshow together. Or better yet, we’ll take back-to-back rides in a Corsair or Mustang!

Come see us if you are ever in South Carolina, USA!

    Mike
